Thursday evening we discovered that we no longer had cable, internet or phone service and suspected that the unexpected interruption in service may have something to do with the sounds we heard in the back yard. So I went up to see who or what might be making the noise. This is what I saw.

What you see in this picture is my next-door-neighbor's north fence on fire. According to the news, the carport on the property behind his caught on fire.
The fire spread to a tree and some surrounding structures. We were asked to leave our house because the fire was spreading rapidly and things were exploding.
The fire took down some lines. I think it was only phone and cable lines. The power was turned off for a time, but I think that was just a precaution. This is what my street looked like.
Lots of ugly black smoke and a fire engine in front of the house with the fire in the back yard. There were more fire engines on the street just to the west of us, and fire hoses everywhere. The fire hoses were crossing the streets to connect the hydrants where the water needed to be.The fire started around 5:30 pm and by 7 pm the fire was out.
In these pictures you can see the remains of the neighbor's fence, the tree that was damaged by the fire, and the next picture is zoomed in on the damage to the apartment residents' cars.
So, lots of excitement, intense heat, big flames, tons of people in the street, damage to cars, yards, and peripheral structures, but no injuries. And on the plus side for me (though not others), the smoke was blowing away from my house so the stench and ashes went elsewhere.
